Expressing Disgust Through Body Language
- Pulling or jerking head back to physically put distance between them and the source of disgust
- Turning body or head away to avoid looking at the thing (or person) that disgusts them
- Wrapping arms around oneself as a way to comfort them or shield themselves
- Shrinking back or recoiling – a full body over-the-top retreat
- Shuddering, shaking, trembling – disgust can sometimes invoke fear or discomfort
- Tense shouldersÂ
- Clenching fists – for disgust that gives rise to frustration or anger. For example, the character was cheated on, and they feel disgust and anger.
- Covering mouth or nose to block bad smell or stifle a gag
- In the case, the character touched something that disgusts them:Â
- Pinching fingers together and pulling away, like removing something sticky or dirty
- Rubbing their hand on their clothes
- Scrubbing at skin or clothes to remove the physical source of disgust
- Waving or swatting the air in an attempt to physically push away a bad smell
- Leaning back or away from the source of disgust
- Shaking head in disapprovalÂ
- Fidgeting nervously due to discomfort
- Stiffening or freezing from shock
