“Say Hanami,” you said to your friends as you positioned your phone’s camera to take their photo.

“How many more pictures? We’re here on a picnic, and I’m getting hungry,” one of your friends pouted.

“Just one more.” You laughed but quickly lowered your phone and began frantically looking around. Were you just imagining things?

“What’s wrong?” Your boyfriend gave a small smile. “It’s our graduation. We are finally free from high school. Are you happy?”

“I am…but…we won’t see each other.”

“Says who? We are going to different colleges, but that doesn’t mean we will never meet again.” His voice didn’t sound convincing.

“Are we breaking up?”

“Wouldn’t it be better that way? Don’t worry, (y/n). I don’t plan on dating any woman,” he chuckled.

“You won’t,” your voice cracked.

“No. I promise we will meet each other again. Wait for me, okay?”

“(Y/n), what’s wrong?” Your best friend asked, concerned.

“N-Nothing. You guys start eating. I will be right back,” you weakly smiled and hurried towards a particular tree. The tree held a deep meaning for you as it was the first place you and your boyfriend kissed; moreover, it was where he promised to meet you again.

Every Hanami, you visited the tree hoping to see him waiting for you, and every Hanami, you returned disappointed. As you reached the tree, you looked around with bated breath. Not a person in sight.

Unbeknownst to you, a man watched from you behind the tree. “Even now, you’re hoping I return.” The wind carried away his whisper before it could reach your ears.

Disappointed. Overwhelmed. Sad. Angry. You didn’t know which emotion to feel. It had been years since you saw him, but you never forgot him. Did he forget you? Did he forget the promise he made to you? Your eyes began to sting, but before the tears could escape, you felt a pair of strong arms wrap around your waist.

“Did I make you wait long?” He rested his chin atop your head to prevent you from turning your head around.

All these years, you came up with scenarios about what you would do when you finally met him and what you would say. Now that the day had finally come, you weren’t sure how to react. “What do you think?”

“Sorry…”

“What took you so long, Sotetsu?”

“I’ll tell you some other time,” he whispered, freeing you from his hug. Taking the chance, you spun around on your heels, nearly losing your balance, but the moment you saw him, your lips parted, and all you could do was stare. You couldn’t even remember what you were going to say.

Sotetsu smirked, “You’re drooling.”

His words made you blush and pout, “It’s your fault.”

“I know,” he laughed.

“Know what?”

“I’m too sexy to resist.”

You laughed while rolling your eyes. Standing on your toes, you threw your arms around his neck. In return, Sotetsu bent down and tied his arms around your waist.

“Now that I found you…don’t leave me again…please.”

“I…won’t…”

While you smiled in his embrace, Sotetsu squeezed his eyes shut. Every Hanami, he would watch you from afar and see you waiting for him. Every Hanami, he would see you cry and walk away in disappointment. This Hanami, he couldn’t resist.

‘Was this a wise decision on my part?’ He wondered. Would his connections to Starless and suspicious people put you in danger? What if they see you as a soft target and harm you? Should he have shown himself to you? What had he done?

Koku Banner

Why was Kokuyou adamant about traveling during the nighttime, especially on his motorcycle? When people go on road trips, they usually travel during the day and rest at night; meanwhile, Kokuyou thought it was a great idea to drive along an empty stretch of road without humans or building for miles on out.

“How much longer until we get a hotel?” You asked through your Bluetooth device.

“Are you tired?”

“No.”

“Then why do you want to find a hotel?” He asked.

“It’s the middle of the night.”

“So?” He was as blunt as ever.

“What if someone jumps out and attacks us? What if we see a ghost in the middle of the road? What if someone died here and they came back for revenge? What if someone tries to rob us?”

“Someone’s been watching a lot of horror movies,” Kokuyou laughed. “If anyone tries to attack you, I’ll cave their face in.”

“What if it’s a ghost?” You huffed.

“Then I’ll cave the ghost’s face in.”

Much to your relief, Kokuyou stopped the motorcycle on the side of the road, but your relief was short-lived. No buildings were in sight, and to add to it, Kokuyou said, “We have to hike up that hill.”

“Oh, come on! What are you up to, Kokuyou?”

“Who knows?” He teasingly chuckled.

The higher you went up the hill, the thicker the forest got. Moreover, the silence of the night was disturbed by unusual sounds. As you began recalling scenes from horror movies, you shifted closer to Kokuyou and clung to his arm. He only chuckled in return.

“How much longer?”

“We are here,” he said.

Exhaling loudly, you rested your hands on your knees and took a minute to catch your breath. “About time…”

“Stop whining and look up, will ya?”

You stood up straight and lifted your eyes to the sky. Streaks of orange, purple, and blue were painted on the black background, while shimmering white diamonds adored the foreground.

A squeal escaped your lips, “So pretty!”

Your boyfriend sat down in the middle of the hill and lit a cigarette, and you joined him. As you watched the night sky, he watched you. Without moving your gaze, you asked, “Am I so beautiful that you can’t stop looking at me?”

“I will do anything to see that smile,” he whispered.

You snapped your head in his direction to find him staring at the sky as if he hadn’t said anything at all. Blushing, you rested your head against his shoulder. What other sides did Kokuyou have that he hadn’t shown you yet?
